High-temperature Resistant Protection

How Can Polysiloxane Resin Deliver Long-Term Protection Under 500°C and C5 Coastal Conditions?

In LNG, petrochemical, and natural gas industries, outdoor equipment often faces multiple challenges simultaneously: high operating temperatures, coastal salt spray, humidity, UV exposure, and thermal cycling.

For such demanding environments, heat resistance alone is not enough. The coating must also provide good weatherability, corrosion protection, adhesion, and long-term stability.

Durle® SH-113 polysiloxane resin from Quark New Material has been successfully applied to an LNG flare project in Beihai, China, providing protection under a combined 500°C operating temperature and C5 coastal corrosion environment.

1. Project Conditions: A Combination of High Temperature and Severe Corrosion

The Beihai LNG flare operates under demanding outdoor conditions:

Application: LNG flare equipment

Corrosivity: C5 coastal environment

Equipment height: Approx. 11.5 m

Substrate: Rock wool + composite metal

Operating temperature: Up to 500°C

The coating must withstand high-temperature aging, UV radiation, humidity, salt spray, and repeated thermal expansion and contraction.

2. Core Solution: Durle® SH-113 Polysiloxane Resin

Durle® SH-113 was selected as the key resin for the protective coating system, offering a balanced combination of:

  • High-temperature resistance

  • Weatherability

  • Corrosion protection

  • Good substrate adhesion

  • Resistance to thermal cycling

  • Long-term performance stability

The project also adopted St 2.0 mechanical surface preparation, without abrasive blasting, helping simplify field application and reduce preparation costs.

3. Field Validation: Two Years of Stable Service

Actual field performance is the most valuable test for industrial coatings.

After approximately two years of outdoor service, the SH-113-based coating system has remained in stable condition, with no significant peeling, delamination, chalking, or abnormal corrosion observed.

Compared with the customer's previous conventional silicone coating system, which showed noticeable cracking and corrosion after approximately one year, the SH-113-based system has demonstrated a longer protection period and reduced maintenance requirements.

4. Why High-Temperature Coatings Also Need Weatherability

For outdoor high-temperature equipment, heat resistance alone does not guarantee long-term protection.

The coating must simultaneously resist:

High temperature + UV + moisture + salt spray + thermal cycling

This is why a high-performance industrial coating needs a balanced combination of heat resistance, weatherability, corrosion protection, adhesion, and structural stability.

5. Typical Applications of SH-113

Durle® SH-113 can be formulated for a variety of demanding industrial applications, including:

LNG and natural gas equipment

Petrochemical equipment

High-temperature steel structures

Flare stacks and chimneys

High-temperature pipelines and tanks

Heat exchangers and other outdoor thermal equipment
